A Digital Chapter for an Analog Soul: Why It Only Took Us 29 Years

A Digital Chapter for an Analog Soul: Why It Only Took Us 29 Years

If you're reading this on a screen, don't panic, you're in the right place. Yes, The Papery finally has a website. I know what you're thinking. "Nolan, it's 2026. Most businesses did this thirty years ago." And you're right, but in our defense, we're a pen and paper shop. We've spent the last three decades being intentionally, stubbornly and happily analog. While the rest of the world was upgrading their servers, we were busy debating the precise GSM of a new Leuchtturm1917 notebook or marveling at the way a Lamy fountain pen glides across a page.

Building a website felt a bit like trying to write a symphony with a blunt pencil. But as the third generation in this family business, I figured it was finally time to help Dad (Michael) bridge the gap between our beloved ink-stained counters and the digital world.

Three Generations of Ink in Our Veins

For those who don't know our full story, The Papery didn't start in Victoria. It actually began in 1971 in Yorkville, Toronto, where my grandmother Sylvia and her partner Valerie opened the very first shop. My dad, Michael Rogers, was just nine years old when he started helping out. He eventually brought that passion west, opening our Victoria location in 1996. I recently moved out here from Ontario to join him and it's been an incredible journey learning the ropes of a shop that has been a Fort Street staple for 29 years. We've survived economic shifts, a global pandemic and a move to our much larger space at 734 Fort St. Through it all, the one thing that hasn't changed is our belief that some things, like a handwritten note or the perfect Japanese washi tape, just can't be replaced by an app.

The "Slow Roll-Out" (Because We Have A Lot of Paper)

Now, a quick disclaimer: because we carry such a staggering variety of products, from thousands of individual greeting cards to rare fountain pen inks and origami paper, you're going to notice that our online store looks a little lean at first.

Think of this as a "Slow Roll-Out." We are hand-picking items to add to the site day by day, but the truth is, our full range is just too massive to digitize all at once. If you want the full "Papery Experience", the smell of the paper, the feel of the wax seals or the chance to test out a Kaweco pen in person, you'll still need to come visit us downtown.

We're adding our most popular staples first:

  • Traveler's Notebooks and inserts.
  • Fan-favourite Tom’s Studio Pens.
  • A curated selection of our best-selling journals.

Our "Happy Place" is Now Everywhere

Our goal has always been for The Papery to be Victoria's "happy place", a spot where you can slow down and find something beautiful. This website is just an extension of that. Whether you're a local regular or someone discovering us from across the country, we're glad you're here.

Thanks for bearing with us as we finally learn how to use a keyboard. We promise the pens aren't going anywhere.
